POLITICAL POSITION · INSTRUMENT EVIDENCE-POL-1

Political position in 12 dimensions, computed in your browser.

48 original statements, a 5 point scale with "don't know" and a 0 to 100 score per dimension, with coverage and confidence declared. Nothing is sent to the server and the result is not indexed.

What it is

evidence-pol-1 is Evidence's own instrument for recording political position as evidence: answers given to known statements, on a date, with a declared method. The result does not label anyone. It shows which way the answers point in each dimension, how many answers support each number and how confident the number is.

Position is not reduced to left and right. Political science shows that economic, cultural and institutional attitudes vary independently, so the instrument keeps 12 separate dimensions and never sums them into a single score.

The 12 dimensions

Each dimension runs from pole A (score 0) to pole B (score 100). 50 means the answers balance out, not that the position is "center".

DimensionPole A (0)Pole B (100)What it measures
State structureFederalUnitaryWhere decisions sit: spread across states and municipalities (federal) or concentrated in the central government (unitary).
RepresentationDemocracyAutocracyHow power is legitimized: elections, checks by independent institutions and pluralism (democracy) or concentrated, lightly checked authority (autocracy).
State powerSecurityLibertyThe balance between state powers to ensure order and security and individual safeguards against those powers.
ImmigrationAssimilationMulticulturalismWhat is expected of newcomers: adopting the destination culture (assimilation) or cultures living side by side with public recognition (multiculturalism).
DiplomacyMilitaristPacifistThe weight of military force in foreign policy: armed power as a central tool (militarist) or negotiation, mediation and arms reduction (pacifist).
Foreign interventionNon-interventionistNationalistThe stance toward other countries: not interfering and honoring international commitments (non-interventionist) or asserting the national interest above them (nationalist).
OwnershipPublicPrivateWho should own the means of production and essential services: the state (public) or private firms (private).
Economic coordinationPlanningFree marketHow the economy is coordinated: targets, prices and credit steered by government (planning) or set by supply and demand (free market).
Foreign tradeProtectionismGlobalismOpenness to foreign trade and investment: protecting domestic production (protectionism) or integrating into global markets (globalism).
ReligionIrreligiousReligiousThe place of religion in public life and law: strict separation (irreligious) or religion as a reference for the state (religious). It does not measure personal faith.
Social normsProgressiveTraditionalistHow law relates to social norms: keeping up with social change (progressive) or preserving inherited norms (traditionalist).
TechnologyTechnologyBiologyThe stance on technologies that change body and life: adopting and extending abilities (technology) or respecting natural limits and precaution (biology). Thinner conceptual basis than the other dimensions.

Method

  • 48 statements, 4 per dimension. In every dimension, agreeing with two statements points to pole B and agreeing with the other two points to pole A, so automatic agreement does not push the score.
  • Answer scale: Strongly disagree, Disagree, Neither agree nor disagree, Agree, Strongly agree, Don't know. "Don't know" does not score and lowers coverage.
  • Statements are interleaved across dimensions and the dimension is not shown during the questionnaire.
  • Wording rules: one idea per statement, no named party, candidate or person, no loaded adjective, a concrete trade-off whenever possible.
position of an answer p = (value − 1) / 4 (inverted statement: 1 − p) score = mean of p × 100 (no scored answer: UNKNOWN) coverage = scored answers / 4 consistency = 1 − 2 × standard deviation of p (one answer only: not measurable, 0.50 in the index) confidence = coverage × consistency (high ≥ 0.75, medium ≥ 0.50, low below)

Answering "strongly agree" to everything yields 50 with consistency 0 and low confidence: the instrument shows the contradiction instead of hiding it.

Privacy

  • Political opinion is sensitive personal data under Brazil's LGPD (art. 11). That is why everything runs in the browser: no account, no form, no analytics and no request with your answers.
  • Answers stay in this browser tab (cleared when it closes) and in the result address after the #, which is never sent to the server. A button clears them.
  • The result page is noindex. The portable URL carries only the 12 scores and the date, never a name.
  • Saving the result in an Evidence workspace is a separate, explicit step: you paste the URL in /app and confirm "Manter como evidência". The vector is then private to the workspace, versioned and can be deleted for good.

Limitations

  • Not a scientifically validated instrument in this version: there is no reliability test, validity study or population norm.
  • Four statements per dimension is few: one answer moves the score a lot, which is why confidence is declared per dimension.
  • Self-assessment on a date: the result records answers, not behavior, vote or anyone's political essence.
  • The wording was written for the Brazilian context; the same text may read differently in another country.
  • Scores from different instruments are not on the same ruler; the comparison shows differences, not errors.

Other instruments

The 12 dimension structure takes the multidimensional principle as reference, but no statement, profile, weight or catalog of another instrument (12Axes, Political Compass, 8Values or any other) was used. A result from another instrument enters only when the person pastes its URL, and is shown as IMPORTED next to this one, with its limitations.

Conceptual sources by dimension

The sources define the concept of each dimension; the wording of the statements is Evidence's own.

Frequently asked questions

Are my answers sent to any server?

No. The questionnaire and the calculation run in your browser. Answers stay in the open tab and in the result page address, after the #, a part the browser does not send. Only what you choose to copy or take to your workspace leaves this page.

Does the result say what my ideology is?

No. The result shows which way the answers point in each of the 12 dimensions, on a date, with the confidence of each number. There is no label for people, no ranking and no voting advice.

Is the instrument scientifically validated?

Not yet. This version has no reliability study, validity study or population norms. The dimensions rest on the political science literature cited below, but the statement wording is original and has not been tested on a sample.

Can I compare with another test's result?

Yes. On the result page, paste the URL of another recognized instrument (such as 12Axes) and see the differences per dimension. It is read in the browser, and the notice makes clear that different instruments are not on the same ruler.
